Birgu, or Cittá Vittoriosa, is one of the oldest cities on the Island and played a crucial role in the Great Siege of Malta in 1565. The city, located on the south side of the Grand Harbour, is inhabited by 2,261 residents.
Birgu was once the central city in Malta and had a long military and maritime activities history. Its position within the Grand harbour was critical, and several military leaders wanted to take over the city. Therefore, the Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Normans and Aragonese all shaped and developed Birgu.
Yet, no one did more for the city than the Knights of St. John, who arrived in Malta in 1530 and made Birgu the capital of Malta.
Birgu is a unique city with fortified walls, ancient history, monuments and palaces.
